Our History

More than a half century ago, father and son team Jesse and Ron Dustin paved the way to the future by founding Jesse Dustin and Son. What began as a custom home building business in 1959 quickly moved into the commercial market and is today a premier provider of construction management and general contracting services in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

As a fourth-generation family owned and operated company, Dustin Construction, Inc. is led by Todd Cummings, son-in-law of Ron Dustin, and three of his children – Sarah Palmer, Mary Penn, and Tyler Cummings – who are committed to continuing the Dustin legacy.

Dustin brings quality, integrity, innovation, and operational excellence to every new construction, renovation, addition, and replacement project in the K-12, higher education, municipal, and commercial and retail markets.

History of Dustin Construction

In March, Jesse Dustin, a custom home builder, and his son Ron Dustin, an engineering student at the University of Maryland, take out a $3,000 loan and found Jesse Dustin and Son in the basement of their Colesville, MD home.

1962-1964

1962-1964

The company has outgrown its space and moves into a newly purchased office on Southlawn Lane in Rockville, MD where it remains headquartered for the next 25 years. In 1964, Jesse Dustin and Son is awarded its first commercial project, the addition of a Southern States farm store to the Cloverly Village Shopping Center in Silver Spring, MD.

1968-1969

On December 16, 1968, Jesse Dustin and Son becomes incorporated in Maryland. Dustin’s first school project, Broad Acres Elementary School (now JoAnn Leleck Elementary School) is completed in 1969 for Montgomery County Public Schools. The project is completed for $180,425 and consists of 10,370 SF of additions, including a new gymnasium.

The company’s distinct “JD” is added to the logo in honor of founder, Jesse Dustin, who passes away in 1976. During the 1970’s, Dustin prospers through building and renovating schools, churches, hotels, and public buildings. Dustin constructs Brunswick Elementary School for Frederick County Public Schools and Sherwood High School for Montgomery County Public Schools. In 1976, Dustin renovates the Winchester Hall government building in downtown Frederick, MD.

In 1981, Dustin Enterprises, a fully owned subsidiary of Jesse Dustin and Son, Inc. is founded. By the end of the decade, Dustin’s first construction management project is in design for Howard County Public Schools System – the new 73,713 SF Mayfield Woods Middle School. During the 1980s, Dustin continues its strong presence in the education, religious, and public building markets, including construction of the Sandy Spring National Bank Headquarters and St. Andrews Ukrainian Church.

On August 1, 1985, Jesse Dustin and Son, Inc. changes its name to Dustin Construction, Inc. In 1987, Dustin completes construction of its new office located on Beechcraft Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD. Future Dustin president and son-in-law of Ron Dustin, Todd Cummings, joins the company.

In 1996, Dustin completes its first higher education project, the Educational Facility II at the University of Maryland, Shady Grove campus. Throughout the 1990s, the company continues to grow into new markets with larger and more complex projects, including the Upcounty Government Center, Chesapeake Beach Water Park, and Olney Swim Center. Dustin also establishes a strong presence in Virginia with the construction of Ashburn and Lowes Island Elementary Schools for Loudoun County Public Schools.

2001

2001

On January 10, 2001, Ron Dustin retires and Todd Cummings is promoted to president. Over the next 7 years, Dustin successfully completes four separate Design/Build student housing projects for George Mason University totaling 1,008,500 SF and 2,638 new beds.

2006-2009

2006-2009

Dustin begins performing Construction Management at Risk services in 2006 with the construction of College Gardens Elementary School for Montgomery County Public Schools. In 2009, Dustin constructs a new headquarters building in Ijamsville, MD, and with the integration of Dustin Enterprises, the company begins offering construction management and general contracting services from one office. Additionally in 2009, Dustin completes its first LEED project – Randallstown Community Center.

2013-2017

2013-2017

In 2013, Dustin completes Spring Mills High School for Berkeley County Schools, the largest high school in West Virginia. In 2017, Dustin begins construction of Seneca Valley High School for Montgomery County Public Schools, the largest high school in Maryland. During the 2010s, Dustin participates in the 21st Century Schools program to revitalize Baltimore City’s aging schools. The company continues to complete notable projects including the Nancy H. Dacek North Potomac Recreation Center, Travilah Fire Station, Ft. Stanton Recreation Center, and the Front Royal Police Headquarters.

In 2019, Dustin celebrates its 60th anniversary. Through decades of success, Dustin remains committed to its core values as a leading provider of construction management and general contracting services.
